Day 1 — Aug 31
Arrive in Montana
Fly into Glacier Park International Airport (FCA). Pick up the rental car and drive to our hotel outside Glacier National Park.

Glacier National Park
Three full days exploring one of America's most pristine wildernesses. Two big hike days tackling the Grinnell Glacier and Highline Trail, plus a day combining shorter trails to Hidden Lake and Avalanche Lake. Watch for mountain goats, grizzlies, and clear skies over the Continental Divide.
Day 5 — Sep 4
Drive to Big Sky
Head south from Glacier to Big Sky, Montana — a mountain town nestled in the Gallatin Range and gateway to the Custer Gallatin National Forest.

Day 6 — Sep 5
Custer Gallatin National Forest
A full day hiking near Big Sky. Fewer crowds, rugged alpine terrain, stunning wildflower meadows, and some of Montana's best-kept-secret trails.
Day 7 — Sep 6
Drive to Grand Teton
Continue south through Montana and into Wyoming, arriving at Grand Teton National Park with the iconic Teton Range rising from the valley floor.

Grand Teton National Park
Three days beneath the Tetons. Hike deep into Cascade Canyon, loop the lakeside trails of Taggart, Bradley, and Phelps Lake, and keep an eye out for moose, bears, and osprey.

Depart from Jackson Hole
Drive from Grand Teton to Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) for the flight home. The airport is right at the park's southern edge.

This route ends with an off-trail scramble to Wing Lookout, a spot just above Grinnell Glacier itself. On the way, you'll hike to Grinnell Glacier Viewpoint before breaking off on to this off-trail adventure. This route is not recommended as a winter adventure. Even during the summer months, the route is often covered in snow, especially near Grinnell Glacier. When the route is covered in snow or ice, parts of the route require technical training and equipment.

Access: Many Glacier Road
Grinnell Glacier is an absolute must-see in Glacier National Park. This challenging hike offers glaciers, waterfalls, lakes, forest, wildlife, and incredible views. You can start at the Grinnell Glacier Trailhead or take a boat from the Many Glacier Hotel across Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine, shortening the hike by about 3.5 miles roundtrip. The hike passes through alpine meadows with Mount Grinnell on your right, climbing switchbacks to Grinnell Glacier Viewpoint with incredible views of the 150-acre glacier, Garden Wall, Grinnell Lake, Mount Gould, and Gem Glacier.

Access: Going-to-the-Sun Road
This must-do point-to-point hike spans from Logan Pass to the Loop Trailhead, with an optional offshoot to the Grinnell Glacier Overlook and a stop at the historic Granite Park Chalet. Requires taking a shuttle or getting a ride back to Logan Pass. The Granite Park Chalet is a historic wilderness lodge reached only by trail — there is no water source at the chalet, so carry plenty of extra water.

This trail takes you up and over Hidden Lake Pass to Hidden Lake Overlook. You'll be standing between the towering Clements Mountain and the jagged ridgeline of Reynolds Mountain overlooking Hidden Lake. Amazing views of open grasslands and mountains throughout. You can continue down to the lake shore. There is one steep, exposed section — hiking boots recommended.

One of the most popular hikes in Glacier National Park with incredibly clear blue waters and stunning mountain views. The trail starts on the Trail of the Cedars through old-growth cedars and hemlock forest, then gradually climbs along Avalanche Creek to a beautiful glacial melt lake fed by waterfalls from the surrounding alpine bowl. Arrive at the parking lot early — it fills quickly. Known for bear activity, so be prepared.

Access: Cascade Creek Road
Hike the Lava Lake Trail to discover a lovely lake surrounded by the majestic Spanish Peaks. The trail starts by passing above some summer cabins then leads into the captivating Cascade Creek Canyon. Initially through thick lodgepole forest, the views gradually open up as you gain elevation, revealing expansive alpine scenery. The final destination of Lava Lake is a true highlight.

A must-see spot near Big Sky offering some of the most beautiful scenery in the area. Stunning alpine meadows and summer wildflower fields with a dramatic mountain backdrop. In fall, great for spotting elk, moose, and bears. Trail can be steep, rocky, and muddy in places — sturdy hiking boots recommended. The effort is well worth it for the incredible views of the Montana wilderness.

Access: Jenny Lake Shuttle Boat
An unbelievable hike into the base of the Cathedral Group in the Grand Tetons. Take the Jenny Lake shuttle boat to cross the lake, then hike up to the 200-foot Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point with great views of Jenny Lake. Continuing along Cascade Creek makes for a fantastic day hike deep into Grand Teton. At the end, you can continue right to Lake Solitude. Great trail for spotting wildlife — be on the lookout for moose and bears.

A moderately challenging loop near Moose, Wyoming. Popular for birding, hiking, and trail running. Best visited May through September. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. Takes an average of about 2.5 hours to complete.

Access: LSR Preserve Entrance Road
A hike along the creek and around Phelps Lake. Keep an eye out for wildlife — bears and moose are frequently sighted. Mostly flat with occasional inclines, well marked and easy to navigate. Great photo spots at Huckleberry Point and the giant rock on the opposite side.
